Premium quality Screwdrivers.

Premium quality Screwdrivers.

CK Screwdrivers
The earliest screwdrivers of which written evidence remains were used in Europe in the late Middle Ages. It seems that they were probably invented in either Germany or France, in the late 15th century. The tool's original names in German and French were Schraubendreher (screwturner) and tournevis (turnscrew), respectively, reflecting the native linguistic patterns of Germanic and Romance languages. The first documentation of the tool is in the medieval Housebook of Wolfegg Castle, a manuscript written sometime between 1475 and 1490. These earliest screwdrivers had pear-shaped handles and were made for slotted screws (diversification of the many types of screwdrivers did not emerge until the Gilded Age). The screwdriver remained inconspicuous, however, as evidence of its existence throughout the next 300 years was based primarily on the presence of screws.
Types of head vary, and can be identified below.

Manufactures of electronic equipment use hard to obtain, or even redesign a screw head to limit ones access to the inside of their products. The Iphone is protected by a Pentalobe and equipment like the Nintendo WII use a Tri Wing

How to Pick the Best Soldering Iron by soldering iron.

Weller WS81
A soldering iron is a hand tool used in soldering. There are many soldering irons available on the market. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Which soldering iron to choose for yourself depends on the soldering projects you are planning to do, as well as how often you are planning on using it.
The four main factors to consider when choosing a soldering iron are:
1) wattage
2) type of the soldering irons
3) temperature control
Wattage
The wattage of the soldering iron is one of the most important factors of a soldering iron. Most soldering irons used in the electronics are in the range of 20 – 60 Watts. Soldering irons with the wattage of 50W is very common these days and it will provide sufficient heat for most of soldering projects on the circuit boards.  Soldering irons with higher wattage (40W -60W) are better. It does not mean that soldering irons with higher wattage apply more heat to the solder joint - it means that soldering irons with higher wattage have more power available. Since most of soldering stations come with a control knob on power stations for setting the iron’s temperature, it is possible to regulate the amount of heat on iron tip.
Generally, there are 4 different types of soldering irons:
-Soldering pencil
-Soldering station
-Soldering systems (rework /repair stations)
-Soldering guns
Soldering stations consists of a soldering pencil attached to a power station. The power station has a control for setting the desired temperature on the tip of soldering iron. Some soldering stations come with electronic temperature control - that means you can very precisely set and maintain the temperature of the iron. The power station automatically keeps the iron tip at an appropriate temperature. Soldering stations can cover most of soldering projects including soldering of through-hole components, and very fine surface-mount components as small as 0603 and 0805.
Rework/repair systems are complex soldering systems which are mostly used in industry or in the high-volume manufacturing facilities. Soldering systems usually consists of several hand pieces including soldering iron, hot-air gun, de-soldering gun, thermo-tweezers, etc.
Soldering guns
Main part of a soldering gun is a transformer which converts 220 V AC to a lower voltage. A secondary winding of transformer has only one turn. This way the secondary of transformer produces very low voltage and several hundred amperes of current since primary of transformer is connected to 220 V AC and the secondary winding of transformer has only one turn. This high current is routed through copper tip of soldering gun and as result the tip of soldering gun is quickly heated by the high current flowing through it.
Soldering guns can be quickly and easily turned on and off and they have a very short warm up time. However, I do not recommend using a soldering gun for fine work on circuit boards since they can generate too much heat and can therefore damage circuit boards or the components on it.
A gas iron allows you to solder without the restriction of having to find a power source, ie 220v ac. Ideal for work out in the field or in those hard to reach places, and fire up in seconds.

Some essential tools for your holiday DIY.

Some essential tools for your holiday DIY.

DIY
The end of the year is drawing near, and so too has the list of things that your were supposed to fix for your spouse around the house. The holidays, give you just the opportunity to get the long DIY list done. It doesn't matter if you are a pro or a first timer, us guys, find great solace in knocking in a few nails, or fixing things around the house. The time will soon come when you need to break out the toolbox. Every person should have a set of tools handy around their home as quick repairs often prevent the need for costly fixes. So how does your toolbox currently look? Should you find yourself lacking in this department, take a look at 10 essential tools we think you should always have.
1. Flat and Phillips screwdrivers. Screwdrivers are all important, we know the perils of tightening a screw with a knife or twisting it in with your fingers.  Flat screwdrivers not only lock in flathead screws, but can also help you with prying and scraping. Phillips screwdrivers, on the other hand, have a four-star point that allows for more torque to be applied. They are a preferred screwdriver for many home improvements. Here is a handy guide to make sure you have the right screwdriver.
2. Tape measure.  Guys are pre-occupied with measuring stuff, and before you think I'm headed for the gutter, think about it? The size of your mags on the car 13",14" 19"? The size of the flat screen on the wall, the distance to the beer fridge. Choose one that is spring-loaded so it can quickly retract when not in use. I find one that has cm and feet are quite handy.
3. Safety glasses. Ok so this is a no brainer. (Like the famous helmet saying: If you have a 10 dollar head buy a 10 dollar helmet), it's all too late when you realise you needed eye protection - after an accident, rather just have a pair in your toolbox as standard, and when you work wear them.  Full stop. Safety glasses can not only protect you from unexpected debris, but also harmful irritants.
4. Hammer. There is no better tool, when a DIY job is going south!  I'm teasing, a Hammer is a must have, and can be used to hammer in nails, remove unwanted nails, shaping (soft) metal, chipping out plaster / tiles, etc. Idealy choose one that suits your hand weight and function wise, you need a hammer that is the right choice for the job at hand.
5. Electric drill and bits. What would home improvements be without a power drill? I have spent many a happy day up a ladder drilling stuff.  Surprise the Mrs, when you put up the curtains and there is no "F'ing and blinding" because the right drill works wonders, and enables you to drill with ease 9 times out of ten, secure a picture to the wall or a curtain rail, or even an electric fence.  Another firm favourite is battery operated drills, but be well advised make sure the batteries are charged, there is nothing more frustrating than reaching for a drill and its batteries are dead flat. Remember to chose the correct drill bits, masonary for brick and concrete, HSS (high speed steel) for metals, and wood drills for wooden applications.
6. Adjustable wrench / ShifterThis guy is so handy to use, and by just adjusting it, takes the place of a whole set of spanners, it can be used in the kitchen or bathrooms, or garden sheds / fences, anywhere there are nuts and bolts of different sizes.
7. ToolboxKeeping your tools organised and together makes such a difference, when trying to find the right tool for the job at hand. It also assists you in not losing tools on site. It enables you to reach into the cupboard take out one bag (toolbag) and have all your tools at hand on site.  When you are finished you can return it to the cupboard safe in the knowledge that your tools are all accounted for.
8. Combination pliersA pair of pliers always come in handy, whether it is pulling a wire through a wall and you need just that little but of purchase, or straightening out a nail, pulling out staples.  You can even use it to cut wires or strip them preparing them for installation. (please remember the safest electrical jobs are done with the power OFF)
9. Pocket knife.  While you might think that it's because I live in Johannesburg, I don't go anywhere without my knife clipped into my pocket, I'm that guy always on the ready, when boxes arrive and need to be opened & unpacked, or that piece of string cut. Most DIY projects and repairs tend to have things that need to be cut, it is best to keep this knife in your inventory. Truth be told I have even used it to cut chocolate cake and the most showy trick, opening a beer with the knife (practise makes perfect), and did I tell you? it buys you lots of credo, when your friends see it's a Bear Grylls

10. Level.
Watching the Boks trounce Scotland, or the Boks downunder scuttling the Aussies on your home Flat screen, is just that much more enjoyable, when you mounted it level, this stops the crick in your neck. Using a level correctly can be the difference between hanging a crooked picture or flat-screen TV on the wall. They also keep things level when you replace windows or install a new door. Levels will help ensure your projects are properly installed.

The month of Movember.

The month of Movember.

I'm sure you all saw what can only be described as awe inspiring. Felix Baumgartner did an amazing supersonic free fall, we got to see some truly amazing pictures from his adventure.  Have a look at the Video.
Felix Jumps
I have just moved homes, so the new sounds at night have me up and running through the house in the middle of the night, Torch in hand, checking what's going on. Needless to say it's more often than not a wooden blind knocking in the wind, or a security gate rattling. Part of settling in I have had to fix plugs, install door latches, and soap dishes.  My toolbox has come in handy.
I was trying to change a lightbulb in the ceiling yesterday, and it proved to be a tad more taxing, I had to switch off the lights (to be safe) and in the dark I climbed up my Wonder Ladder (which is actually fantastic you can use it in 15 different positions, thanks to the locking joints function), withTorch in hand.  But I soon realised that extracting the downlight fitting from the ceiling was going to quite tough, as I had the torch in my mouth trying to direct the light in the right place, screwdriver in the other.  What I really needed was my Headlamp. To find my headlamp in all the packed boxes is another story. The response to our CK Magma bags that we showed you HERE (which is our blog) was phenomenal.  We gave about 250 bags new happy homes in about 3 weeks.  If you acted quickly you are now the proud owner of a smart Toolbag.
As most of you know we (the Christensen's) are South African, but of Danish decent, and our company logo has always been an eye-catching Viking(not so eye catching for the lands they plundered back in the day!) Towards the end of every October I get that bit more excited, as it signals the beginning of  Movember this year, we have a company team, feel free to join us and have some fun, growing a mo, for a good cause.  We think having a Norse Viking, showing us a proper moustache the viking way from way back in the 790's is way cool.

CK Magma bags on promotion.

Normally if you give a price or "special" offer, the spam gods, decide to turf your email, and my valuable readers like yourself would miss out, and this is too good to miss out on.

Well after last month's mail about the Rusty Pool light I had a good chuckle when I read that some astronauts were really battling with Sticky bolts flummox astronauts. It was amusing that even with the amount of money that NASA spends on space kit they battle with similar problems you and I do.
The low down of this month's email has me a tad perplexed. As much as I want to tell you what is going on, I have to be careful to not anger the spam gods.  So I have decided to post it to our blog and there I can give you the low down.  Suffice to say that if you have drooled over one of these two bags (or both), it would do you the world of benefit to scoot along to

CK 2632 priced @ R515 excl. vat                            &    the CK 2631 Rucksack priced @ R429 excl. vat
These prices represent a discount of 50% off the normal selling price!  That's a great deal!

We are offering these two bags at a never before seen pricing model. The sales Director  Bernd at CK called me and said they had made an error while ordering and were now sitting with masses of extra bags, and could we assist?, I jumped in and ordered hundreds, as I know how popular they are.  Word got out to my sales guys and even before they have landed we have sold off more than half of the shipment.  If you would like to enjoy one or a few of these bags for yourself or your technicians, please don't delay, drop us an Email or Find us here.

As with all good things, this offer will come to an end.  Prices available while stocks last.

Cape Canaveral - Sticky bolts proved too much for spacewalking astronauts, forcing them to leave a new power-switching box dangling from the International Space Station instead of firmly bolted down.

Nasa scrambled to reduce the power demands of the orbiting lab and balance the electrical load, while mapping out a plan that could have the astronauts going back out as early as next week to tackle the problem.

It was a major disappointment for Nasa's Sunita Williams and Japan's Akihiko Hoshide, who spent hours struggling with the bolts. They used all sorts of tools and tactics as the spacewalk went into overtime, but nothing worked.

With time running out, Mission Control finally told them to tie down the box and head inside.

"We'll figure this out another day," Mission Control radioed.

Thursday's spacewalk was supposed to last 6½ hours but stretched past eight hours. It ended up in Nasa's top 10 list for longest spacewalks - at the No 3 spot.

Vulnerable

The power router is one of four, and Nasa stressed that the other three are working fine. Nonetheless, electrical usage will need to be closely monitored at the 420km-high lab given the failed effort.

"The team may have to manage power loads a little bit, but this is familiar territory," said Nasa's space station programme manager, Mike Suffredini. "We'll be able to deal with that while we decide what our next plan is."

While the space station remains in stable condition, Nasa would like to take another crack at securing the box as soon as possible - perhaps next week - because of the mid-September departure of half the six-member crew, including the second US astronaut, who ran the robot arm from inside the station.

And the longer this situation goes on, the more vulnerable the space station is to additional failures, Suffredini noted.

Until the problem is resolved, the space station is able to draw power from just three-quarters of its solar wings - six instead of all eight.

The old switch box started acting up last year, and Nasa decided to replace it before it failed. This was the first spacewalk by Americans since the final shuttle flight a year ago.

Williams and Hoshide had trouble getting the old unit out because of two sticky bolts, and they found metal shavings in the sockets. They squirted in compressed nitrogen gas to clear the holes, and some debris came out. But still, the main bolt would not go in properly; the companion bolt was left undone.

Frustration

The frustration mounted as the minutes and hours ticked by. At one point, Mission Control radioed: "We've tried almost every backup we have on this stupid bolt."

At a news conference later in the day, Nasa officials said possible solutions might involve lubricating the thick, sturdy bolts or applying more torque.

Putting in a new switching box was the No 1 priority of the spacewalk. In separate work, the astronauts managed to hook up one power cable and get another cable halfway connected. They never got around to replacing a bad camera on the space station's big robotic arm.

Mission Control did its best to cheer up the spacewalkers as they re-entered the space station. "You guys are rock stars, just so you know," Mission Control said.

It was the second spacewalk in less than two weeks. On 20 August, two Russians worked outside the orbiting complex, installing shields to protect against micrometeorite strikes.

It's no longer common for astronauts to step into the vacuum of space. That's because after almost 14 years, the space station is virtually complete.

Williams is the lone woman at the space station. She and Hoshide arrived a month ago, launching from Kazakhstan aboard a Russian rocket.
