Keeping it light -

Christensen Tools

Specialist Tools & Equipment

To my surprise I woke up early this morning, eager to get an early start in the office. I thought I would get a kick start on a few things I needed to get done in the (my desk is starting to look like a prop from a horror movie).

The traffic was a breeze (i know im tempting my old freind and his law - Murphy...) I arrived at the gate and pressed the remote, then pressed again, and again.. After closer inspection the reason the gate didn't open became apparent. We had no electricity! and by the look of things neither did the rest of Jeppestown.

This meant that I had to open the office manually- but the building insides were in pitch darkness, dark rooms and passage ways. The old adage of "The cobblers children have no shoes"? Well I was determined that wasn't going to be me. I reached into my cubby hole and got out my handheld Super bright LED mini torch, being LED it uses hardly any battery charge (3xAAA), and so works when I need it. It is surprisingly bright.(come to think of it now, I should have used my headlamp, freeing my hands up to unlock locks & doors)

Super Bright 9 LED mini torchSuper Bright 12 LED Headlamp

I have a few of these torches (both styles) stashed away in my home and car, my take is you just can't have enough torches. The headlamp version is perfect when you need to use your hands for something other than holding the torch. I think im going to include a few of these torches in my god children's Christmas stockings, (i think their folks will also get to use them). Handheld @ R60, headlamp R79.20 (both INCLUDING batteries, ex vat while stocks last)

Best regards,

John Christensen

How to Solder

To BEE or not to bee?

Christensen Tools

To BEE or not to bee?

If I was to ask you about BEE, you might think I was referring to those "Yellow & Black" striped creatures that are single minded in finding their way into your Coke can and then buzzzzzing around once they have landed in your sweet cola.

Loves cold drinks & sugary treats

But that's not really what's on my mind today. It's has far wider reaching repurcussions. BEE, that of Black Economic Empowerment.

Just this past weekend, I helped a friend return an orphaned baby to an orphanage 40 mins out of Johannesburg, after a "weekend outing", and what struck home was the severity of those that need our help, from very grassroots level. I tell you from first hand experience it can easily reduce a grown man (or woman) to tears.

We as Christensen Tools, would like to contribute to a better South Africa, for all of us and our children. We feel its more than just complying with the regulations & guidelines set out by government. We feel we have a responsibility. When fans meet on a Saturday to cheer on the Springboks (especially now that our trophy display is bulging), it's as if the lines of the country don't matter, everyone gets behind the team for the country. We have embraced BEE in the same light. We regularly make donations to Oliver's House, Cotlands, Kids Haven, Sparrow Schools Educational Trust - They are needs that touch our hearts.

We have just recently been audited by a SANAS accredited rating agency and we have achieved a "LEVEL 4 contributor" Status.

At first glance we are happy with this rating but we will be trying even harder in this coming year to continuously improve our score card.

Need a Trade-in?

Christensen Tools

Need a Trade-in?

Don't you just love it when its time to buy something new, all that anticipation of the new gadget or gizmo. Take a new (or newer) car? (With the economic recession bearing down on us, not many of us have had that luxury. Car dealerships are feeling the pinch.) Anyway I'm getting side-tracked.

My point actually is: When you trade your old car in you get a unique chance to say "Goodbye" to any niggles, hassles, things that were broken, the odd scratch or dent. You get a new model, latest technology, and it all works, (& the smell of new leather), and a windscreen without all those stone chips- which is great. Reality is, most of us have to hang onto our cars for a good while more, so we thought we would get you into the spirit of "trade-in's".

We know you have always wanted a Download the Fluke 2009 catalogue (in PDF)multimeter- so bring us any multimeter, no matter what brand, or condition, and we will give you a trade-in of 15% off the list price of any Fluke multimeter you choose to replace your old one with. (it kind of still needs to still resemble a meter, please)

You can bring us any old multimeter and you will receive 15% discount on the purchase of a new Fluke multimeter. You need to leave the old meter with us.We don’t mind which brand of multimeter it is, as long as the one you replace it with is a Fluke. It is a one for one promotion …. One old meter entitles you to a 15% discount on one new Fluke multimeter. Ten old ones entitles you to a 15% discount on 10 new Fluke multimeters…. etc.

Fluke MetersFluke 115Fluke in action

You can select from:
Fluke 110 series - Fluke 113, Fluke 114, Fluke 115, Fluke 116, fluke 117
Fluke 170 series - Fluke 175, Fluke 177, Fluke 179
Fluke 280 series - Fluke 287, Fluke 289
Fluke 80 series V - Fluke 83V, Fluke 87V
Fluke 77IV, Fluke 88V……

Today its pretty cold in Johannesburg, stay well & warm wherever you are. ( and bring us your old meter... Please)

John Christensen

Under the Spotlight

Under the Spotlight

The ladies in my family are very industrious, they love to sew and knit and do all those lovely things that end up with a completed quilt! Ideal for the cold weather we are now experiencing in Johannesburg! What the h*ll has that got to do with electronics I hear you say?? Well the fact that they do is a little immaterial (to you), but the process they use is what is important. When they tackle a task or project that is intricate and needs to be done right, and it will be the same for you; we discover that our eyes that were as sharp as that of the preverbial hawk, are now peering through a set of glasses. (much to our dismay)

FEM SL-114

It's not ladies doing knitting and sewing that benefit from the advances in technology, but us too! Doesn't it make more sense to have the object that we are trying to manufacture / repair / check out well lit? (and magnified), now there's a bonus.

We are glad you asked, because that's exactly what the Illuminated magnifyer does! Its small enough to fit on your desk, it has a nifty desk clamp, which enables the lamp to swivel, it has sprung elbows to enable it to hold a position, and it plugs into 220v!

This beauty is now on special click the image (above) to find out just how much, and it is available in dashing white.

John Christensen

How Static Blows Up Your Costs

How Static Blows Up Your Costs

More than 70% of the time, when things go wrong with your technology it's static. We don't like to admit it, I know, and we blame a lot of other things. Luckily your clients don't know that!

Have you ever done this? I know I have. You walk up to your desk, ready to start for the day, touch your work surface and there it is *TWAK*. And that sickening feeling - "Oh Bother, now I've really done it!" (you may use stronger language if you wish).

If you live in the Highveld the problem gets even worse! Highveld winters, when the static electricity caused by the dryness make your hair stand on end and shock you every time you touch a door handle, is really a killer for technology equipment.

It’s easy to put anti-static measures in place, and the rewards for doing so can be great. Please have a look at our 2009 Static Control range:

Wrist Straps & Accessories

Norastat Table Mats

Field Services Kits

Static Dissipative Gloves

Polyurethane Foam (PU)

Metriso 2000- Test Kit

I know it sounds like I'm trying to sell you stuff, but according to some very robust studies (don't expect them to be as readable as this email though), every rand spent on anti-static will save at least ten times that amount in losses. That means your next pair of dissipative gloves you buy is going to save you R720 this year alone.

How much is static costing you every month?

It’s easy to put anti-static measures in place, and the rewards for doing so can be great. We think we can save your business money and help you run more smoothly. Please have a look at our Static Control range here.

John Christensen

A Screwdriver Bit Me!

Christensen Tools

A Screwdriver Bit Me!

Who hasn't picked up the wrong end of a soldering iron?

Oh, man! When I was about 2 years old, my uncle left his soldering iron plugged in on the desk in his studio. It was one of the big ones. I thought that it was a screwdriver and picked it up. The darn thing bit me!

My yell brought the house down. My uncle got my hand under cold water and gave me something to ease the pain. And then headed back to his studio. When he saw what was left of his wooden chair, where I had dropped the soldering iron, his yell brought the house down.

I've also dropped my iron a couple of times over the years. It's incredible how one develops cat-like reflexes when something hot is headed for your shorts.

But don't blow it because you don't have the right kit. Use the proper tools.

May I ask a favour? We're doing as much as we can to make sure we have what you need to get your job done. We've been doing it for 40 years, but with times changing as fast as they are right now, we need some help.

I have set up a very short survey which asks just one question: What is the biggest work-related problem you're facing right now? Simply write it down in your own words. I'll read each answer, and I'll use some clever software to identify the biggest issues - and then we'll try and add some value for you. Please Go Here.
