Smarter by design.

One on the great parts of my job involves spending time at our offices in Durban and Cape Town. What I can say for certain is that these are way nicer places tobe in during the cold dry winters of my home town Jo'burg. Durban wasnice and sunny, Cape Town had a bit of rain, but was pleasantlywarm! I think I need to schedule more winter times there,starting again next week! I really don't enjoy the cold. While in Cape Town, I had installed a router, but just couldn'tget it connecting to the other Pc's. The long of the short is Ihad to cut the connectors off the cable and re-crimp the connectors, and voila, it all worked, and I thought pre-made cables were the way to go.

Our friends at arenever satisfied with their product range and we often get updates,the new MAGMA range of toolbags really looks smart, combined with thesuccess of the previous version, we already have these bags flying offthe shelves. It changes the impression of your brand, foryourself or your technician servicing a clients equipment, the clientcan see you are a professional outfit by the tools and in this case (nopun intended) your toolcase.

They have the ever popular Rucksack in their new range, they also do toolbelts, tool vests & Gel kneepads (still to be released). We are updating their new products fast andfuriously on our site, keep an eye out for more from their range.

Another thing I get to do at work is spend time on Youtube (the bossencourages it, ha ha), I have found some really informative videospertaining to our industry, I have loaded the link on our site, and youjust might find something of interest there too. We have beensupplying the Xuronrange of precision cutters for some time now, but I'm not sure if youare aware they have a lead retaining clip which stops the component legor similar from flying across the room and sticking in your colleagueseye, look Here. From the stats on the last email that went out, there was much hilarity on Harry and Paul 40...45 years(more so than anything else I had to say.) I have found some realpearlers. If you, like me, are having issues with Apples andBlackberries, you will enjoy this have a chuckle on me.

Eye catching.

Wehave had quite an action packed couple of weeks, the World cup hasalmost come full circle, lest we mention SA's most hated ref BryceLawrence (what a &*&#*^), The Dalai Lama has beensnubbed and now the death of the Apple Icon- SteveJob's. Incidentlally we have found a great video of a speech he gave in 2005, it's a must watch. It's only had 11 miillion views so far.

Tuesday most stressful?

A new report has found that "The most stressful time of the working week is Tuesday ay 10am a study has revealed. "But on Tuesday reality sets in and staff spend the very first part of the day going through emails they ignored on Monday before planning the week ahead."

So I thought I would add one more for you to read, and all the while I thought we suffered from the Monday morning blues!

This year has started off with a bang as we already enter the last week of January 2011! It really seems we are hamsters in a wheel, spinning faster and faster.

We were approached by SouthAfrica magazine, and we got our 5minutes of fame, they have run an editorial on us, which is quite a nice read, read it HERE if you would like to.

LEDs present many advantages over incandescent light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved robustness, smaller size, faster switching, and greater durability and reliability. LEDs powerful enough for room lighting are relatively expensive and require more precise current and heat management than compact fluorescent lamp sources of comparable output.

Its amazing to me how much technology evolves and at the rate it does. In my house I have a plethora (yes its actually a word) of torches, & lights (mostly LED), I have one at my front door, for lighting during black outs, & for fending off unruly guests, in my car, in multiple kitchen draws. Basically I have a fasination with them, the bigger the lumen the more i'm interested. The LED torches just keep on working and the batteries last almost forever.

Ever have a piece of glass or a fine splinter in your hand, and all you need is light and some way of magnifying the image so you can get the offending item out?? Well this is what I needed last Sunday night when I had an offending piece of glass lodged in my foot!

While I was overseas sourcing products I found a brilliant new range of LED lamps, we have brought in what we believe to be the first LED magnifying lamps in South Africa, LED technology has evolved in leaps and bounds, giving you great light with little energy consumption, for all us greenies!

They also have a lovely item called "Helping hands" - you know the situation, while trying to solder a small wire onto a tiny connector you end up holding the soldering iron in your mouth, while holding the two connections , and you end up burning your fingers along with a lot of cursing. So this is must have - it just makes things a little easier, why battle?

Its always nice to get a little more than you expected, like when they fill your chip packet to overflow when you order a hamburger. Or a full tank of fuel with a new car. A months free electricity (Ja right like that would ever happen!!)

With that in mind, I thought while tinkering around the house that there are many "nice to haves" that are mighty useful when you are doing your job, but you somehow forget about: like a roll of insulation tape, bag of cable ties, a multi-tool a ESD wrist strap& mat? These are just a few items we are now including as standard in our RSA 1808c-ck toolkits. (no extra charge- yes you read that right). We are continually working at improving them, so if you have any bright ideas, please let me know. When I find more enhancements be sure to find them in the kits. (1708c-ck to follow shortly)

So there we were yesterday, carrying on as we normally do (light office banter) when one of our accounts ladies came running through with her calculator! It was some-what dripping. She had knocked a glass of water on her desk over, and the majority of the glass' contents had landed in & on the calculator ( Murphy's Law).

The initial response was to try & dry it out with a hair dryer, and lots of shaking and blowing, while this would help, the hot air can cause damage to sensitive electrical components, I suggested they open it up (they unplugged it first to bring it through, but disconnect the batteries if there any), and then thoroughly cover it in our RESOLVE ALLPURPOSE spray.

RESOLVE ALL PURPOSE is a water repelling spray, perfect for cellphones & other electrical components dropped in water, it is also brilliant for aiding in loosening of tight bolts & nuts, dissolving of rust and preventing of corrosion, protecting tools the list goes on.

Dries wet electrical equipment
Eases loosening
Dissolves rust
Lubricates and cleans
Prevents corrosion

So the crissis was averted and the calculator lived to crank out those numbers once more, Resolve saved the day. I have a can under my sink at home, you won't believe how many times it comes so in handy.

Have you got blueteeth?

We have all seen the TV ad, where the technically challenged guy goes in for a cellphone upgrade, and then brags to his work colleagues about how he now has "blueteeth". The way technology evolves I personally am thrilled to be born into this boom! I just love anything technologically gadgetty! Ok so? Im glad you asked that....

Our great supplier FLUKE has just dropped off a unit for us to test, and initially I thought that the unit was well how do I say this.... broken, as the screen and the body were not really so much attached! In fact they were very much apart. (like when you drop the tv remote and insides lie scattered all over the floor) This usually spells doom for a gadget. (this is what i saw)

Turns out the clever folk at FLUKE have designed a meter that you can plug leads in one end and run measurements, and unclip the display and carry it away from the test site (up to 10 meters away). You can imagine the uses, testing in a hard to reach place, where the screen is not easily visible.

They use Bluetooth technology which pairs the screen and body together when you "dock" them. You can use up to 10 units in the same room without everyone getting very confused. (ofcourse you can just dock the screen and use it as a normal meter).

To my surprise I woke up early this morning, eager to get an early start in the office. I thought I would get a kick start on a few things I needed to get done in the (my desk is starting to look like a prop from a horror movie).

The traffic was a breeze (i know im tempting my old freind and his law - Murphy...) I arrived at the gate and pressed the remote, then pressed again, and again.. After closer inspection the reason the gate didn't open became apparent. We had no electricity! and by the look of things neither did the rest of Jeppestown.

This meant that I had to open the office manually- but the building insides were in pitch darkness, dark rooms and passage ways. The old adage of "The cobblers children have no shoes"? Well I was determined that wasn't going to be me. I reached into my cubby hole and got out my handheld Super bright LED mini torch, being LED it uses hardly any battery charge (3xAAA), and so works when I need it. It is surprisingly bright.(come to think of it now, I should have used my headlamp, freeing my hands up to unlock locks & doors)

I have a few of these torches (both styles) stashed away in my home and car, my take is you just can't have enough torches. The headlamp version is perfect when you need to use your hands for something other than holding the torch. I think im going to include a few of these torches in my god children's Christmas stockings, (i think their folks will also get to use them). Handheld @ R60, headlamp R79.20 (both INCLUDING batteries, ex vat while stocks last)

To BEE or not to bee?

If I was to ask you about BEE, you might think I was referring to those "Yellow & Black" striped creatures that are single minded in finding their way into your Coke can and then buzzzzzing around once they have landed in your sweet cola.

But that's not really what's on my mind today. It's has far wider reaching repurcussions. BEE, that of Black Economic Empowerment.

Just this past weekend, I helped a friend return an orphaned baby to an orphanage 40 mins out of Johannesburg, after a "weekend outing", and what struck home was the severity of those that need our help, from very grassroots level. I tell you from first hand experience it can easily reduce a grown man (or woman) to tears.

We as Christensen Tools, would like to contribute to a better South Africa, for all of us and our children. We feel its more than just complying with the regulations & guidelines set out by government. We feel we have a responsibility. When fans meet on a Saturday to cheer on the Springboks (especially now that our trophy display is bulging), it's as if the lines of the country don't matter, everyone gets behind the team for the country. We have embraced BEE in the same light. We regularly make donations to Oliver's House, Cotlands, Kids Haven, Sparrow Schools Educational Trust - They are needs that touch our hearts.

We have just recently been audited by a SANAS accredited rating agency and we have achieved a "LEVEL 4 contributor" Status.

At first glance we are happy with this rating but we will be trying even harder in this coming year to continuously improve our score card.

The ladies in my family are very industrious, they love to sew and knit and do all those lovely things that end up with a completed quilt! Ideal for the cold weather we are now experiencing in Johannesburg! What the h*ll has that got to do with electronics I hear you say?? Well the fact that they do is a little immaterial (to you), but the process they use is what is important. When they tackle a task or project that is intricate and needs to be done right, and it will be the same for you; we discover that our eyes that were as sharp as that of the preverbial hawk, are now peering through a set of glasses. (much to our dismay)

It's not ladies doing knitting and sewing that benefit from the advances in technology, but us too! Doesn't it make more sense to have the object that we are trying to manufacture / repair / check out well lit? (and magnified), now there's a bonus.

We are glad you asked, because that's exactly what the Illuminated magnifyer does! Its small enough to fit on your desk, it has a nifty desk clamp, which enables the lamp to swivel, it has sprung elbows to enable it to hold a position, and it plugs into 220v!

More than 70% of the time, when things go wrong with your technology it's static. We don't like to admit it, I know, and we blame a lot of other things. Luckily your clients don't know that!

A Screwdriver Bit Me!

Who hasn't picked up the wrong end of a soldering iron?

Oh, man! When I was about 2 years old, my uncle left his soldering iron plugged in on the desk in his studio. It was one of the big ones. I thought that it was a screwdriver and picked it up. The darn thing bit me!

My yell brought the house down. My uncle got my hand under cold water and gave me something to ease the pain. And then headed back to his studio. When he saw what was left of his wooden chair, where I had dropped the soldering iron, his yell brought the house down.

I've also dropped my iron a couple of times over the years. It's incredible how one develops cat-like reflexes when something hot is headed for your shorts.

But don't blow it because you don't have the right kit. Use the proper tools.

What's a Technical Stethoscope?

After a few years of study a student doctor gets to wear a stethoscope. After that NOBODY asks for his qualifications or diplomas. Just hanging a stethoscope around his neck says "Trust Me. I'm a Doctor."
